H&N Friday Show Edit
This guide describes the process for editors assembling the Friday show edit for Here & Now. The instructions are currently designed for Windows computers and may vary for Mac users.
Prep for Edit
The assigned show editor should attend the weekly H&N meeting at 3:30 PM on Thursdays before the Friday show. If you are not on the Zoom meeting list, ask Marisa or Cynthia for an invitation.
After the meeting, Marisa will provide a production rundown with information and deadlines for H&N Friday staff. Example below:
Editors should specifically note the highlighted area about “tapes.” Tapes are completed segments provided to the show editor or they are segments the editor will assemble. Tape assignment is listed in the “Edited By” section. The name - which is also the export file name - is listed in the Tapes area too.
Inception
Inception is a program used for H&N, providing a detailed rundown of scripts and segment timing. If an editor needs to build a tape, information can be found in Inception.
A link for access is available here: https://inception.pbswi.wisc.edu/
Speak to Cynthia if you need login credentials. If accessing remotely, you must be logged into GlobalProtect.
Airtable
Premiere Project
To find the Adobe Premiere project for each weekly H&N edit, follow this file path:
nap > Premiere Projects > H&N Weekly > find HAN # OR create new HAN #
When editing media recorded from the studio, make sure you are using an XDCAM 1080i 29.97 sequence.
Projects can be organized and assembled anyway a show editor would like. Files should be copied to nap (formerly facilis) for editing, but exceptions are allowed to import media directly from HAL. To locate studio-recorded media, navigate to: sn_cirrus > digital dub > _Rec2edit > HereNow
Importing media and project editing should take place on nap, not HAL. But if media is large in size, editors can import certain files from HAL to avoid long transfer times.
Other notes to consider when building tapes for H&N’s Friday show:
Include a slate with the tape name
Add 1 second of video pad at beginning of the tape AND 5 seconds of video pad at the end
When a tape is complete, send a file to Marisa in Slack for review
General best practices for using Premiere, along with template projects and sequence presets, are available here.
Graphics for H&N tapes are created using a transparent video clip and the XPression NLE effect (Plugin available in Vilas) in Video Effects.
Click File, click New, and create a transparent video clip
In the Project panel, add transparent video into your sequence
In Video Effects, apply the XPression NLE effect to the transparent video clip
With the clip selected, go to the Source Monitor. Open the applied effect in Effect Controls, click Browse, click Rundowns, click on the weekly number
Graphics for the editor’s assigned week are available here
Export
There are two methods for exporting tapes or files for Here & Now: XDCAM 50 export for the Friday show OR creating mastered files for the Production Master Repository (PMR).
XDCAM Export for Show
After a tape is approved, export the file as XDCAM 50 to: xcode_dropbox > MXFDirect > HereNow
The file name for the exported tape is listed in the H&N production rundown provided by Marisa. The file names cannot exceed 15 total characters. EX. ColdTape2145. For revised or V2 files, something like ColdTapeV2_2145 would work also.
Mastered File for PMR
Files can be exported as XDCAM 50 to: xcode_dropbox > ProductionMaster > HereNow
Exported files should include:
A slate
2 seconds of black between slate and segment
The segment itself
15 seconds of black at the end
The sequence start time should be set to 00;59;40;00.
The file name cannot exceed 25 characters and will begin with “6HNP”. EX. 6HNP2127AttorneysIntro.
Downloadable export settings for XDCAM and low-res review files available on Google Drive.
After all tapes and files are sent to xcode_dropbox, the editor must wait on standby until 5 PM (or show completion) to confirm all media has been successfully processed.
Report any problems or needed updates to Josh Kappler, Tom Micksch, or Marisa Wojcik.
